Hello there! A LOT has happened since I’ve left Germany and moved back to South Africa a few months ago so I wanted to take a minute to re-introduce myself.

My name is Carla, I recently moved back home to South Africa after living in Europe for 4 years. I am a Certified Personal Trainer, currently freelancing 2 jobs from home and starting my own Personal training business on the side.

Since I’ve moved back I’ve received countless DM’s,  about why I’m back, what happened etc. But I’ve been back for 3 months now and I’m ready to just put it all out there and answer the questions I get asked almost daily!

  • What has been the biggest thing to adapt to since being back?

The driving! It took me weeks to feel confident on the roads here, not just because I am driving on the other side of the road but also because people here just drive as they want, the rules are different, you have to be a lot more vigilant with who is behind you, next to you or in front of you. People driving with toddlers on theirs laps, smoking with all the windows closed with a new born baby in the car, and that half the cars here don’t have all their lights working still baffles me. These are things I never ever saw in Germany and forgot even happens.

  • What will be the things you will miss most about Germany?

This was tough one, not to sound negative about Germany what so ever but I think the big main thing I do miss, is my old life. My apartment, all my furniture and decorations, my car, my work, my colleagues, my salary in euros (haha), independence and the freedom to travel anywhere in Europe at anytime. And I hated it when I was there, but I will probably miss the snow.

  • Will I move abroad again?

At first, I would say a definite no, after moving to Germany at 18, then to London, moved back to SA, moved houses here, then to London again, then to Germany, and then again to a new place in Germany and now to Gordonsbay. I’m going to be honest and say I am a bit over moving and I am really looking for a place to settle now. I will go abroad for projects or traveling, but giving up my whole life and starting over somewhere new is kind of out of the question….for now. Depends on the situation.

  • What do you plan on doing in South Africa?

Oooooooooh the big question, very simple. I know what I don’t want to do.

  1. Get a full time job/do only one thing
  2. Work for someone else.

So at the moment I am freelancing for 2 very different companies, and I’m starting my own Personal training business on the side. I love having all these different things in one day and scheduling my own hours. It really works well with my personality. I never want to stop Personal training though, I just don’t want to do it full time/40 hours a week anymore. I don’t feel like I can write and talk and post about fitness if I am not currently working in fitness or practicing it but it is also very exhausting. Human interaction and personal training someone is what gives me the most joy in the entire world though, it is what drives me and is definitely my passion. I just want to keep it at a certain amount of hours that I can still enjoy it, give my clients 100%, and be well rested and have enough time and energy for my other passions as well.

  • Where are your Personal training based?

I am currently offering my services in the Helderberg area (Gordonsbay, Strand, Somerset West) but after a high demand I have decided to do 2 mornings in Sea point, Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Although spots will be very limited)

  • And the big question, why did I move back?

YES, can I just confirm the “rumors”. I did split with my ex that never featured on my social media anyway. I found out I was cheated on multiple times over the space of 2 years (without my knowledge) meaning I quit my job, booked my flight, packed my bags, and left Germany as soon as I could. I never planned on staying in Germany forever so it wasn’t out of the blue, just sooner than what I expected. I’ve moved on, met someone extremely special, am eternally grateful for the support of my parents for picking me up when I was broken. And I am happier now with myself, and my life than I was in the last 9 years.

Moving on…
